How to Remove Sulfur Water Smell

November 3, 2009 · Filed Under Plumbing

Does your water stink like rotten eggs? Sometimes this is called sulfur water – the hydrogen sulfide gas dissolved in the water that is causing the offending smell. Although more common to well water or private sources of water, it can also be found in city water sources on occasion. The smell permeates your whole house. You may not even notice the sulfur odor any longer in your home, but your visitors will definitely notice!

Your water pipes may also be turning black as hydrogen sulfide is very acidic. Your silverware tarnishes in just moments when coming in to contact with the sulfur water. A high concentration of the gas will also wear out the resin of a water softener prematurely. High concentrations of sulfur in water can be both flammable and poisonous. While such high levels are very rare, it can be unsafe because it can cause nausea, illness and in some extreme cases, death.

So even if the stench wasn’t driving you to repair your sulfur water, taking care of it is a must for your personal health – and the durability of your water pipes.

Luckily, sulfur water treatment solutions are simple to implement quickly and painlessly – and your water will smell better and taste better instaneously with treatment.

For very small amounts of sulfur in the water, any pitcher filter, countertop or under-counter with a simple activated carbon filter will absorb the hydrogen sulfide. However, this will not be an ideal solution for higher concentrations as it is necessary to change the filters very frequently which will become cost prohibitive.

There are two main ways to treat sulfur water.  The first is to aerate the water with an aeration kit.An aeration kit consists of three sections to allow for two stages of sulfur treatment. The first stage is an Air Injector that draws air into the water line prior to the pressure tank. After the pressure tank, the air is mixed with the water in a mixing tank and the excess air is released out.  Aeration will do a fantastic job as long as you are dealing with a minor sulfur problem. Costs for an effective aeration system will start at roughly 0-0 and go up from there water.

The second way to address the sulfur is to use a specialty backwash system containing a manganese dioxide media.  The sulfur will oxidize onto the media bed and the system will backwash itself every three days cleaning the media bed to ensure continued performance for up to four years. Then it is necessary to replace the media for continued effectiveness. A manganese dioxide system will start at about $900-$1000 and go up from there depending on the size required. This is a maintenance-free way to address sulfur. If iron and manganese issues are also present in the water, then a manganese dioxide system will be your preferred choice.

Both of these systems are easy to install by a plumber or a handy homeowner.
