Reverse Osmosis Water Filtering: Know Your Choices

September 29, 2009 · Filed Under Plumbing

The best way to filter drinking water today is the reverse osmosis filter. This kind of water filter just joins onto your water pipes. Consequently you’ll always have pure, unpolluted water available at whatever time you want it. Most people will find these residential water filters within their means since the prices aren’t as high as they once were.

Remember that it will also cost you money to have these filters professionally installed. Yet in the long run, the cost is justified by the future savings it provides. This is because the filters and the system itself will last much longer than other water filter units, including absorption systems or particulate filters.

Reverse osmosis filtering utilizes a filter with microscopic holes. These perforations allow only water to make their way to the opposite side, which comprises the essence of the purification process. Unwanted substances such as chemicals, minerals and metals get caught in the membrane and are thereby eliminated from the water.

Three different types of reverse osmosis water filter are available these days for use in the home.

First of all is the type that goes under the sink. This option requires a plumber to attach it to the water pipe underneath the sink. A new faucet has to be installed so the pure water can come from that faucet, and the unfiltered water can come from the main faucet. This way you can separate your non-pure water for your washing up, hand washing etc. from your pure water which you’ll use for drinking.

The point of entry filter is the other kind of reverse osmosis drinking water filter that can be used. If you are not comfortable with installing the filter yourself, this unit can be professionally installed by a plumbing contractor. But it’s hooked up to the home’s primary waterline, not the inside pipeline. This particular filter provides purified, unpolluted water to your whole household. These systems do carry a higher pricetag than the under sink versions, however they do sanitize all the water that comes into your house.

Then there’s the countertop model, which eliminates the necessity for a plumbing contractor as it can be effortlessly installed by anybody. This water filtering system effortlessly installs straight to the faucet rather than being fastened to the pipes under your sink. The system can be set up with basic tools usually found around the house. The entire house can use this tank as it has more volume than a jug or other portable unit.
