The First Step: Master Plumber School
When an individual is trying to find a plumber, one of the first things they should look for is the licensing of the plumbers within the plumbing company. Lower level plumbers should not work on more complex jobs, and individuals are wise to ask what the license will be of the plumber that is coming out to do the work at his house or office.
Tradesman plumbers have only gone to Master plumber school and have served as an apprentice for about two years full time under a Master plumber or Journeyman plumber. This license is a limited license and the plumbers are not allowed to work on more complex jobs or oversee other plumbers.
Journeyman plumbers have also completed Master plumber school but have done an additional two years in the field under supervision of a Master or Journeyman plumber, making their work experience at least four years in total. This license is a more comprehensive license, allowing for work on most types of plumbing jobs, some limited supervisor roles, and customer service.
Master plumbers are the most experienced in the field and have not only completed Master plumber school and the four years that Journeyman plumbers have completed, but they have also served one more year under a Master plumber specifically learning the skills of a Master plumber. With a registered plumber, an individual can be much more confident that his job will be handled with expertise and care, and that any other plumbers working on the job are under direct supervision of this plumber.
Classroom Experience
Some of the classes that plumbers take in Master plumber school are industrial math and chemistry. Industrial math courses teach plumbers how to do calculations that are required in order to complete projects up to codes and specifications, as well as designing sanitation and ventilation systems for new projects or updated older buildings.
Some classes also teach about new technology, such as the digital plumbing appliances that are now on the market. These products require different skills in plumbers and they have to stay up to date with the market and technology. The chemistry classes teach plumbers how to handle different chemicals safely and also how to decide what type of pipe to use with different liquids and gasses that are piped through them.
Other classes in Master plumbing school are mechanical drawing and blueprint reading classes. These are important so that the schematic of a building or appliance can be read with ease, allowing the plumber to get to the root of the problem more quickly. These classes also train the plumber how to draw sanitation and ventilation systems, so as a Master plumber they can do the plans for multi-level buildings.
