A Closer Look At Shower Head Water Filters

September 1, 2009 · Filed Under Water Purification System

While chlorine is a reliable way to disinfect drinking water supplies, there are some possible health risks associated with using this water to bathe in. For this reason, many people are using shower head water filters for the showers in their homes. If youre in the market for a shower filter yourself, look for models which remove some of the common contaminants found in municipal water supplies in addition to chlorine.

There are a lot of choices when it comes to shower head water filters; however, not all of these shower heads are the same. The truth is that many of them dont filter all that much chlorine out of your water, let alone other possible dangers. Its important to look into what each filter can do before you decide on a shower filter which offers you the protection youre looking for.

That is not to say that the best shower filters have got to be the most expensive, because that is not the case. You just cannot rush out there and grab whatever saves you the most money is all that I am saying. Take for example the following comparison between a $70 model, and its $85 competitor.

The $70 shower head water filters have to have the filter replaced every 3 months at a cost of $25 each time, which would make your first years expenditure $170. The $85 model needs the filter replaced every 6 months at $42 each, which means that you spend $169 for the first year. It will then cost you $16 more every year to maintain the lowerpriced filter.

Going further, you find that the $70 filter is only able to take about half of the chlorine out of your water and that the $85 filter not only removes 90% of the chlorine from your water, but also three other hazardous substances. This is why you should carefully examine the real costs of every shower head filter before making a purchase.

Good shower head water filters will remove at least a few contaminants from your water as well as chlorine. Try to find a filter which also removes most of the VOCs (volatile organic compounds) from your water. These can be very dangerous if you inhale them on a regular basis, such as while showering.

The very best shower filters remove THMs (trihalomethanes) as well. These compounds are produced by the chlorination process which is used to disinfect water supplies. Once vaporized by your showerhead, THMs become chloroform gas, another compound youd be better off not inhaling every time you take a shower.

Shower head water filters are a low cost but efficient way to protect the health of your family by making sure that the water you bathe in is safe and free of chlorine and other contaminants. The best shower filter for your home is one which removes chlorine and other potentially dangerous substances at a price which fits into your household budget.

Just keep in mind that the shower head water filter with the lowest price tag isnt necessarily the best deal; be sure to look at the costs of maintenance and the performance the filter provides before you make your decision.
